Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate, arrived in Miami on Wednesday, after fleeing the country with his wife and two daughters in direct defiance of his country's left-wing Supreme Court order. He had been ordered by notoriously corrupt Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Monday to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports within 24 hours, a deadline that lapsed on Tuesday without compliance, leading to the cancellation of his documents by Brazilian police.
The flight path tracked by FlightRadar24 showed a private plane landing in Guayaquil, Ecuador, before taking off for Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, where it landed at about 9:30 a.m. EST. Upon arriving in Miami, Bolsonaro declared himself the "true leader" of Brazil and said he would lead the opposition from exile, accusing the Lula government of political persecution.
The Trump administration explicitly facilitated the move to Miami, with Donald Trump telling reporters, "I would approve. I think they're fine people," and a senior State Department official confirming that visas would be issued to Bolsonaro and his family.
In response, President Lula called Bolsonaro’s exit "shameful" and remarked, "Those who have nothing to hide have nothing to fear." Critics, including Brazilian lawmakers and U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro, condemned the move, with Castro noting that "losing an election is not grounds for asylum."
Bolsonaro lost the controversial presidential runoff to incumbent Lula da Silva by a 3.58% margin on Sunday, and refused to concede defeat amid claims of electoral fraud.
The defeated candidate was under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for alleged money laundering, corruption, and tax evasion, specifically linked to a scheme involving a Brazilian lawyer accused of laundering over $1 billion. He's denied the accusations, calling it a witch-hunt by the left-wing court. The court’s confidential ruling cited his "significant financial resources" and flight risk as justification for the travel ban. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup after the 2022 election loss.
