Artemis II Crew's Orion Capsule Completes Translunar Injection Burn On Path To The Moon

The translunar injection (TLI) burn for the Artemis II mission was successfully completed on Thursday, (April 2), at 2349 p.m. UTC, sending the crew and the Orion spacecraft, Integrity on a path toward the Moon for the first time since 1972. The engine fired for about five minutes and 50 seconds (some reports cite 5:49 to 5:55), adding 867 mph to Integrity's velocity and accelerating it to 24,500 mph to escape Earth's gravitational clasp

This critical maneuver placed Integrity into a free-return trajectory that will carry the four astronauts around the far side of the Moon and back toward Earth without requiring further major engine firings. The burn utilized the Orbital Maneuvering System engine on the European Service Module, generating up to 6,000 pounds of thrust, and was preceded by a "Go" poll from NASA's Mission Management Team after confirming the spacecraft's systems were healthy.

The engine fired at an altitude of just 115 miles above Earth. Mission controllers in Houston described the burn as "flawless," with the crew reporting they are "glued to the window" observing Earth. Integrity is now on track to reach a distance of 252,455 miles from Earth, surpassing the record set by Apollo 13, with a planned splashdown on Day 10 of the mission.

Following liftoff Wednesday, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency(CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen aboard Integrity stayed in Earth orbit for more than 24 hours, checking out the capsule's various systems ahead of its planned plunge into deep space.

"With that successful TLI, the crew is feeling pretty good up here on our way to the moon, and we just wanted to communicate to everyone around the planet who's worked to make Artemis possible that we firmly felt the power of your perseverance during every second of that burn," Hansen, said just after the maneuver.

"Humanity has once again shown what we are capable of, and it's your hopes for the future that carry us now on this journey around the moon," he added.

Artemis 2 launched Wednesday evening (April 1) from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending four astronauts aloft on the first-ever crewed flight of Orion and its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The duo had flown together just once before, on the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission to lunar orbit in 2022.

"Our TLI burn, the burn that gets us going to the moon, is also our deorbit burn," Koch said in a NASA interview before launch. "As soon as we take that burn, we have bought off on basically the rest of the mission."

The TLI burn used Orion's main orbital maneuvering engine, which was salvaged from NASA's space shuttle program and upgraded for an Artemis trip to the moon. The engine has flown in space 19 times before on three different space shuttles. If you strapped it to a car, it would accelerate you from zero to 60 mph (97 kph) in 2.7 seconds.

NASA successfully launched the Artemis II mission on Wednesday, (April 1), at 2235 UTC from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39B, marking the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, standing 32 stories tall, ignited its twin solid rocket boosters and four RS-25 engines to generate 8.8 million pounds of thrust, lifting the Orion spacecraft named "Integrity" into space.

The four-person crew consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman (Commander), Victor Glover (Pilot), and Christina Koch (Mission Specialist), alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist), who became the first Canadian and non-U.S. citizen to travel to the Moon's vicinity.

Close to three and a half hours into the Artemis 2 mission, pilot Victor Glover took control of Orion after the capsule separated from the Space Launch System rocket's Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, or ICPS. Glover will now manually pilot Orion around ICPS, carrying out a series of maneuvers designed to test the spacecraft's propulsion systems and ability to operate in close proximity to another object in space.

"I see it. Look at that, woohoo! I see the ICPS and the moon in the field of view," Glover said during NASA's live broadcast of the mission.

These tests, known as proximity operations or "prox ops," are a key part of this test flight and will evaluate Orion's ability to fly near and interface with future Artemis program hardware such as the lunar lander that will eventually be chosen for NASA's planned moon landings.

"It's quite nice and very responsive," Glover said, referencing the spacecraft's Digital Autopilot (DAP) system.

The 10-day mission is a lunar flyby that will not involve a landing but will travel approximately 250,000 miles from Earth, surpassing the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by reaching 4,600 miles beyond the Moon's far side.

Key mission objectives include testing Orion's life support and navigation systems, performing an in-space rendezvous with the spent Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, and validating emergency procedures for future lunar landings.

The crew is expected to perform a translunar injection burn to commit to the Moon, fly around the lunar far side, and return to Earth for a planned **splashdown in the Pacific Ocean** around April 11, 2026. This flight serves as the critical second step in NASA's Artemis program, paving the way for **Artemis III (lunar landing in 2027)** and the eventual establishment of a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

Trump Admin Plan To Supply $2.8B Worth Of 2000-pound Bombs To Israel, Critics Outraged

The President Donald Trump administration is reportedly preparing a $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel for 40,000 heavy 2,000-pound bombs, comprising 20,000 MK-84s and 20,000 BLU-117s, plus 20,000 I-2000 penetrator warheads.

The MK 84 and BLU-117 are among the most destructive non-nuclear conventional munitions in the U.S. arsenal. Defense experts note that while effective against hardened underground infrastructure, their broad blast radius and shrapnel field cause severe collateral damage in densely populated urban environments.

This would be the largest single sale of these munitions to Israel in recent years, funded by U.S. taxpayer military aid. The deal has been informally notified to congressional committees but still requires formal approval from Congress.

This package comes as U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran continue, with fighting stretching across Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the Gulf.

The Biden administration previously paused transfers of these specific munitions due to concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon, where they have been regularly used by the IDF.

A prior $2.04 billion package approved in 2025 included 35,529 bomb bodies and 4,000 penetrator warheads, with deliveries beginning in 2026.

“All foreign arms sales are moving through the appropriate process. We do not comment on pending sales,” a US offical reportedly said.

U.S. public support for Israel has declined since 2023; a June 2026 Quinnipiac University poll found 66% of Democrats believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel.

The proposed deal triggered backlash among foreign policy realists and "America First" conservatives, most notably commentator Tucker Carlson.

Critics note the munitions are linked to numerous civilian casualties in Gaza, where more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed according to local health authorities.

The report intensified a widening rift within the conservative coalition between non-interventionist "America First" populist figures—who oppose continuous foreign military aid—and traditional neoconservative supporters of robust defense backing for Israel. Progressive and human rights organizations have similarly denounced the deal, citing the ongoing humanitarian toll and destruction in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

In an X post Tuesday, Carlson criticized the scale, noting the shipment equals 40,000 tons of bombs 7.5 times the tonnage dropped in the largest WWII U.S. air raid on Berlin. He said the MK-84 has a half-mile destruction radius, causes rock to melt and flesh to vaporize within 100 feet, and that the U.S. military generally avoids using it in urban areas due to high civilian death tolls.

Carlson called out key figures overseeing or supporting the weapons sale approval pipeline, including U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and congressional leadership, questioning why U.S. taxpayer resources continue to fund large-scale foreign warfare rather than domestic priorities.

US Moves To Seize $61 million In Crypto Linked To 'Illicit' Iranian Oil Sales

U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking $61.5 million in cryptocurrency, specifically USDT held in ten TRON addresses, alleging the funds are proceeds from sanctioned Iranian oil sales.

The complaint, filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, targets the digital assets in rem rather than naming any exchange as a defendant.

Prosecutors allege that two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, used trading accounts on Binance to launder the illicit funds. These firms allegedly converted fiat payments from Chinese buyers of Iranian crude oil into cryptocurrency.

The $61.5 million targeted in the civil complaint represents a portion of the scheme's active balances. As part of the seizure procedure, stablecoin issuer Tether agreed to freeze and destroy the flagged tokens sitting in the illicit wallets, subsequently re-minting an equivalent value directly to U.S. federal custody.

While the complaint highlights Binance as the platform where the laundering allegedly occurred, Binance is not named as a defendant. The exchange said in a statement it does not permit transactions with sanctioned individuals, is cooperating with law enforcement, and had already frozen the targeted accounts.

"We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement on this matter, and where sanctions or illicit-finance risk is identified, we will always investigate, restrict or freeze accounts where appropriate, offboard users, and report to relevant authorities," Binance said.

The $61.5 million represents only a fraction of a larger network internally dubbed “Entity A,” which prosecutors claim processed over $1.5 billion in illicit oil proceeds through unhosted wallets, an Iranian exchange, and accounts linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The government asserts the money was funneled to the Iranian government, its military components, and the IRGC, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, to finance hostile military actions and terrorist activities against the U.S. and its allies. The FBI and multiple Justice Department units are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

The filing reflects heightened U.S. oversight targeting "shadow fleet" oil exports used by state actors to bypass energy sanctions, with particular focus on off-ramp crypto protocols and unhosted wallet networks. It underscores the U.S. government’s increasing reliance on blockchain analysis to enforce sanctions and disrupt revenue streams for state-sponsored entities.

O3b mPOWER: SpaceX Falcon 9 700th Mission Launches 3 Telecom Satellites For SES

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched at 1849 UTC, from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40), Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Suinday (Sept. 13), carrying the Boeing-built final three satellites (O3b mPOWER 11, 12, and 13), to Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) for Luxembourg-based SES' O3b mPOWER constellation.

The Falcon 9 first-stage booster B1080, completed its 29th flight and landed on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean a little less than nine minutes after liftoff.

The rocket's upper stage, meanwhile, continued hauling the O3b mPOWER trio to MEO. The satellites were deployed as scheduled, in a staggered 14-minute window starting roughly 33.5 minutes after launch, using onboard electric propulsion to reach their operational orbits at 8,000 kilometers.

The final satellites feature re-engineered power systems and software adjustments implemented after early power module anomalies were identified in the first four satellites launched in 2022 and 2023. The O3b mPOWER satellites weigh about 1,700 kilograms apiece. SpaceX has launched all of them, on six Falcon 9 launches beginning in December 2022.

Sunday's launch added the final three spacecraft to the constellation, bringing the total to 13 satellites in MEO. The O3b mPOWER network is designed to deliver low-latency, high-throughput broadband connectivity for government, enterprise, and maritime customers. The new satellites are expected to enter full commercial service by mid-2027.

The network is "purpose-built to deliver predictable low latency, exceptional throughput and unprecedented flexibility for industries where uptime isn’t optional," according to the company. "It transforms how networks operate by pairing advanced software defined satellites with an intelligent ground and software ecosystem — ensuring guaranteed performance, even as global bandwidth demands surge," the company wrote.

Sunday's launch was SpaceX's 107th orbital mission of the year. Falcon 9 has performed 105 of those flights, with Falcon Heavy conducting the other two. This also marks the 700th mission for the Falcon rocket family.
