President Donald Trump purchased a Tesla car from Elon Musk at the White House on Tuesday, in a show of support for Musk, who is also a top adviser to the president. Trump showcased a selection of Tesla vehicles on the South Lawn and announced his intention to buy a red Model S, which he will keep at the White House for staff use.
Trump and Musk, accompanied by Musk's child Lil X, displayed a Cybertruck and a red sports car on the White House lawn. Trump praised Tesla as a "great product" and emphasized Musk's contributions to the country.
The president defended Musk against recent protests and attacks on Tesla dealerships, labeling such acts as "domestic terrorism" and promising to take strong action against perpetrators.
"In support of the policies of President @realDonaldTrump and to demonstrate our confidence in the future of the United States, @Tesla commits to doubling vehicle production in the US within 2 years!" Musk wrote on X Tuesday, after the White House event.
Musk, who is advising the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut costs and improve efficiency, has faced criticism for his dual roles in government and private sectors.
Tesla's stock rallied following the event at the White House Tuesday. Musk is appealing a court decision that rescinded his $56 billion compensation package from Tesla.
