Conor McGregor Suffers Knee Injury In Return Fight Against Max Holloway: UFC 329
post photo preview

Max Holloway defeated Conor McGregor via first-round TKO at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, ending the bout just 1:09 into the opening round. McGregor suffered a severe right knee injury while attempting a jumping left roundhouse kick to start the fight, causing him to land awkwardly and collapse.

Holloway followed with ground strikes before referee Marc Goddard stepped in; McGregor was unable to continue, leading Holloway to signal the referee to stop the fight due to his opponent's obvious distress.

This welterweight bout marked McGregor’s return to the Octagon after a five-year hiatus, having last competed in 2021. The rematch was highly anticipated, as McGregor previously defeated Holloway via TKO in 2013 at featherweight.

Commentators noted the tragedy of the moment, with Daniel Cormier suggesting McGregor’s return from a long layoff may have overloaded his executive functions, leading to the reckless attempt that caused the injury.

UFC CEO Dana White indicated medical staff suspected a torn ACL, casting doubt on McGregor’s future in the sport.

"I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow. I will overcome this. I will not be deterred. I will return," McGregor wrote on X after the fight.

Here the other key results from UFC 329.

Argentina, England Advance To The Semifinals Of The 2026 FIFA World Cup: Haaland Tears Up Over Norway Loss

Argentina and England advanced to the 2026 World Cup semifinals after dramatic extra-time victories over Switzerland and Norway, respectively, setting up a historic clash between the top-ranked teams in the tournament. Argentina defeated the 10-man Swiss side 3-1 in Kansas City, while England edged out Norway 2-1 in Miami, securing their first-ever semifinal meeting in a rivalry renewed after 36 years.

The match between Argentina and Switzerland was a tense tactical battle where the Swiss held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw through goals by Alexis Mac Allister and Dan Ndoye.

The game swung dramatically when Breel Embolo was sent off for a second yellow card following a VAR review for simulation, leaving Switzerland to defend for over 50 minutes. Julián Álvarez broke the deadlock in the 112th minute with a stunning long-range strike, and Lautaro Martínez added a late rebound in stoppage time to seal the 3-1 win, extending Argentina’s unbeaten streak in World Cup matches to 12.

In the earlier quarterfinal, England faced a resilient Norway side that opened the scoring through Andreas Schjelderup before halftime.

Jude Bellingham leveled the score with a precise slice just before the break and delivered the winner in extra time, completing a brace that kept England’s hopes alive for their first title since 1966. Manager Thomas Tuchel criticized his team’s sloppy performance despite the win, while the victory marked only England’s fourth appearance in a World Cup semifinal.

The two teams will meet in the semifinals on July 15 in Atlanta, where they will face off for the first time in a World Cup knockout stage since the 1990 quarterfinals. This matchup ensures that the final four consists of the top four ranked teams globally, with France and Spain set to face each other in the other semifinal on July 14.

The England-Argentina clash carries significant historical weight, tracing back to the 1986 "Hand of God" incident, now adding a new chapter to one of football’s most storied rivalries.

US Strikes Iranian Targets As IRGC Declares Strait Of Hormuz Closed, After Attacking Transiting Ships

The U.S. launched a third round of strikes on Iran late Saturday into early Sunday, directly responding to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) closing the Strait of Hormuz and attacking the Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy. Iran later attacked a second ship.

"At 7:15 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command [CENTCOM] forces began launching the third round of strikes this week against Iran after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces blatantly attacked M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM wrote on X. "A civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engineroom damage."

Earlier Saturday, the IRGC declared the strategic waterway closed "until further notice" after firing on vessels it claimed were using unauthorized routes, resulting in significant engine room damage to the Galaxy and leaving one civilian crew member missing. "Due to insecurity caused by the illegal intervention of foreigners, the Strait of Hormuz is closed until further notice and until the end of the United States' intervention in this region. No vessel will be allowed to pass," IRGC wrote in a statement.

The U.S. military reported the ship suffered extensive engine-room damage from a missile strike, leaving a civilian crew member missing. Iran countered that it merely fired a "warning shot" because the ship was navigating an unauthorized route.

Within an hour of the IRGC's declaration, CENTCOM), acting on orders from President Donald Trump, launched the third major wave of its precision airstrikes this week. American land- and sea-based fighter jets, naval vessels, and drones pounded roughly 140 military targets along Iran’s southern coast. Large explosions were recorded near major energy hubs and port cities, including Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Jask, and Chabahar.

In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes on US military bases in Qatar, UAE Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Jordan. IRGC reportedly claimed it destroyed logistical support centers for US aircraft carriers and refueling platforms at Duqm port in Oman with ballistic, in the third phase of its response to the US strikes. This is the first Iranian strike on Oman since early March.

"The era of one-sided deals is OVER. We told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking," Speaker of Iran's parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X with a screenshot of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding highlighting article 5 which reads: “The Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts "for free passage of commercial vessels through Hormuz, “for 60 days only.”

Saturday's mediation efforts by Oman and Qatar failed as Iran rejected U.S. demand to issue a public statement guaranteeing the Strait of Hormuz is open. Trump had declared the ceasefire between US and Iran over; and on Saturday threatened total devastation if alleged assassination plots against him by Iran are realized.

US Congressman Ro Khanna Detained By Armed Israeli Settlers, IDF, During West Bank Visit

US Congressman Ro Khanna was detained for over an hour by armed Israeli settlers supported by IDF soldiers, while visiting the Palestinian hamlet of Khirbet Zanuta in the southern West Bank on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

The California Democrat reported that settlers brandishing American-made M4 rifles surrounded his group's vehicle, blocked the road, and refused to let them leave after they inspected a village and school destroyed by previous settler attacks.

Khanna said that when four IDF soldiers arrived, they sided with the settlers and continued the detention until intervention by the US Embassy and high-level Israeli officials secured their release.

"Israeli settlers, brandishing American made M4s, detained me & other Americans on my trip to Palestine," Ro Khanna wrote on X Saturday. "When the IDF arrived, they sided with the settlers & continued our detention. They made a huge mistake. You will be hearing more soon."

The IDF in a statement claimed its troops did not take part in blocking the road and instead dispersed the civilians to reopen the route upon receiving a report.

"The Israeli government is lying to cover up for 4 IDF soldiers who aided violent settlers brandishing M4 guns and threatening American lives," Ro Khanna wrote on X, responding to IDF statement. "I am calling for their arrest and prosecution. I have met with Israeli hostages and condemned the brutal, terrorist attacks of Oct 7. That does excuse the IDF from detaining American citizens."

The incident has intensified scrutiny on settler violence and US military aid, with Khanna calling for the prosecution of both the settlers and the involved soldiers.

This event occurs amid rising tensions within the Democrat Party over the Israel-Palestine conflict, influencing Khanna's potential 2028 presidential campaign as he advocates for a "new moral direction" regarding human rights in the region.

Popular American journalist Tucker Carlson slammed Mike Huckabee, affter the U.S. Ambassador to Israel posted on X about his coming appearance on Fox News to talk about Iran, instead of addressing the Khanna incident.

"An Amercian member of congress is threatened by foreign terrorists carrying American rifles, backed by a foreign military paid for by American taxpayers, and the US ambassador to that country says not a word in defense of his own countryman, and instead uses his social media accounts to promote his own vapid cable news appearances, which amount to propaganda for that same foreign country," Carlson wrote on X, Saturday. "It’s too much, too insulting and humiliating to America. This is how revolutions start. For the sake our nation, Mike Huckabee should be removed from his post immediately"
