Trump Announces 'Crushing Economic Operation' Against Iran As Strait Of Hormuz Remains Closed To Traffic

President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social early morning UTC Thursday, that the United States is launching against Iran, what he claimed to be the "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country," framing the move as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale."

Trump declared that Iran had "failed to take" a greater opportunity to make a deal, justifying the escalation by claiming Iran’s navy is gone, its air force destroyed, and its currency worthless. He issued a stark warning that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, or government entities to provide a lifeline to Iran would face "tremendous economic consequences."

The President demanded an immediate stop to oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, calling the announcement an "ECONOMIC D-DAY" and urging allies to join the effort to isolate Tehran.

The announcement comes as peace talks remain at a complete impasse, with the Iranians and Trump confirming there are "no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled" with Iran. The U.S. had previously agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in a June Memorandum of Understanding with Iran, but that deal expired without renewal.

Iran remains defiant, with parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stating the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened until the U.S. meets specific demands: lifting the U.S. naval blockade of Iran's ports, removing sanctions on Iran’s oil and gas sales and unfreezing Iranian assets held abroad.

Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway responsible for nearly a fifth of global petroleum transit, has been effectively closed to traffic by Iran since early March, with the U.S. military describing its own naval blockade of Iran as "100% successful" and having redirected 65 vessels. Trump recently threatened "to bomb the shit out of" Oman, if the nation bypassed the U.S. blockade to broker independent commercial shipping routes with Iran.

The UAE recently halted trade with Iran following accusations that Tehran fired ballistic missiles at the country, Iranian officials denied the accusations. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has demanded Iraq crack down on Iran-backed militia leaders over ongoing attacks against its oil facilities.

U.S. and Israel launched massive military operations against Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz and demanded an immediate end to Washington’s maritime containment.

With peace negotiations abandoned and secondary economic sanctions taking effect, the conflict continues to drive global energy market volatility. Oil prices have risen above $90 a barrel as investors worry about prolonged inflation shocks.

"Americans think squeezing Iran harder will win concessions that were never part of the agreement,"  Ghalibaf wrote on X. "Bessent and Hegseth are way out of their league. Stop waiting for the clown crew to pull a rabbit out of their hat and clean up the mess you made."

SpaceX Launches Starship 7th Test Flight

SpaceX successfully executed its second-ever “chopsticks” catch of a Super Heavy booster (or Booster 14) using the “Mechazilla” launch tower on Thursday(Jan. 16), during the seventh uncrewed test flight of the company's 123-meter Starship rocket. However, the megarocket's upper stage(or Ship 33) was lost approximately 8.5 minutes into the flight in a “rapid unscheduled disassembly(RUD)” or explosion

SpaceX CRS-35 Dragon Delivers 2,860 Kg Of Cargo To The Space Station

A SpaceX Dragon docked with the Harmony module’s space-facing (zenith) port of the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday (Oct. 15), at 1427 UTC, as both spacecraft traveled 400 kilometers (km) over South Africa at 28,000 kph, delivering 2,860 kilograms of cargo including fresh food, long-term provisions, research and hardware to the orbital lab and its crew. From inside the ISS, NASA astronaut Anil Menon led the monitoring of Dragon's approach and autonomous procedures.

The Cargo Dragon C211 spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, on Tuesday (Oct. 13), on SpaceX's 35th Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) mission for NASA. After a roughly 51-hour autonomous chase, C211 caught up with the space station. Tuesday's launch produced a notable "space jellyfish" visual phenomenon as sunlight illuminated the rocket’s exhaust plume in the upper atmosphere.

C211 delivered a variety of payloads to support Expedition 75 crew and the newly arrived SpaceX Crew-13 astronauts, including the last pair of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs), critical for augmenting the station's power capabilities; hardware to manufacture artificial retinas in microgravity and 3D heart tissue models for drug testing; components for the Canadarm2 (including a joint for analysis), a toilet dose pump, and a robot micro-conical tool; and general Supplies like food, water, and flight support equipment for the crew.

In addition to the usual provisions carried on this mission, Dragon also brought a special suprise for Menon, who is celebrating his 50th birthday today, according to NASA's broadcast spokesperson.

Dragon will remain docked to the ISS for about one month, before a mid-November undocking from the ISS, packed with completed experiments and waste for its return to Earth. The spacecraft will perform a safe splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, where recovery teams will retrieve the capsule for refurbishment.

Starshield Restriction Disrupts Ukraine's Drone Missions Against Russia

A 160 kilometer/hour(km/h) speed limit was imposed Wednesday, on Starshield terminals -- SpaceX's military-grade version of its Starlink satellite communications service -- without prior warning to Ukrainian forces. This restriction caused connectivity drops at speeds as low as 72 km/h in some units, forcing the cancellation of several drone missions, including mid-range strikes and air defense intercepts against Russian Shahed drones.

Starshield dedicated satellites are owned by the US government. SpaceX builds, launches, and maintains them as contractor. Pentagon has ownership and operational oversight -- with mission directors, kill switches in Government-owned, contractor operated (GOCO) setups -- but day-to-day operations still rely on SpaceX personnel, infrastructure, and cooperation.

The Starshield deployment in Ukraine operates under a Pentagon-funded contract covering about 3,000 hardened military terminals, valid until mid-May 2027.

While commercial Starlink Mini terminals naturally cap out near 160 km/h, military-grade Starshield terminals were specifically integrated into high-speed aircraft and interceptor drones to counter jet-powered Russian Shahed drones. When these Ukrainian drones exceeded 160 km/h during target intercepts, the satellite links dropped immediately, causing several high-priority missions to fail, according to Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps.

Ukrainian officials said this restriction undermined their most effective current defense against jet-powered Shahed drones. Defense technology advisor Serhii Beskrestnov ("Flash") and Ukrainian drone unit commanders reported that the geo-fencing and velocity restrictions were enacted without advance notice. He claimed the move was "not a coincidence" and linked it to the current political situation, noting that U.S. President Donald Trump had recently demanded Kyiv stop striking Russian oil refineries.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior advisers raised concerns about the timing, noting that Russian forces appeared to exploit the gap during air attacks overnight. He described the disruption as a "pity" in an interview with Piers Morgan after meetings in London with British leaders. "It's a big mistake... people will die," he said, and emphasized continued reliance on U.S. partnership.

Ukrainian officials reportedly reached out to representatives of U.S. President Trump's administration, the U.S. DoD, and SpaceX leadership to request an exemption for high-speed interceptor systems defending against missile and drone strikes.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk clarified the distinction between commercial Starlink and government Starshield. "Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government," he wrote on X replying to Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. "Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS. Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action, as doing so would be inappropriate for a commercial company."

By the evening Wednesday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported that connection quality had improved at speeds up to 160 km/h, though the speed cap remained in place.

Poland, which funded over 29,000 Starlink and Starshield terminals provided to Ukraine, publicly cautioned SpaceX and U.S. leadership regarding unilateral restrictions that compromise Eastern European frontline defense operations.

Israeli Spyware Pegasus Targeted Polish Citizens: PM Donald Tusk

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has condemned the use of Pegasus spyware by the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government as a "crime against the state," following revelations that the Israeli firm NSO Group retained technical access to sensitive data harvested from Polish citizens.

A parliamentary investigation and prosecutorial findings confirm that the spyware, acquired for roughly $15 million (60 million PLN), was used to monitor thousands of individuals, including opposition figures, independent prosecutors, and Tusk’s own family, while data was transmitted through servers outside Poland’s control.

Experts determined that Poland’s Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) lacked full administrative control, missing passwords for some accounts and leaving the infection module under NSO’s exclusive control.

The software was deployed in at least 578 cases between 2017 and 2022, with documented targets including prominent political critics and even citizens of other EU nations like France and Germany.

The system was purchased using funds from a Justice Fund intended for crime victims, operated without required IT security accreditation, and judges authorizing its use were not informed of its full capabilities.

Judges who signed off on surveillance warrants did not fully understand the technical scope of Pegasus. Unlike standard wiretaps, Pegasus granted complete retroactive and real-time remote extraction of phone contents.

The current government has filed 11 criminal complaints against former officials, including former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and former security chiefs, who deny wrongdoing and argue the tool was essential for national security.

Tusk said it is "beyond any doubt" that NSO Group cooperates with Israeli intelligence, raising serious concerns about digital sovereignty and foreign oversight of Polish state secrets.

In the video address posted on X, Tusk said that the revelations represent “one of the biggest scandals in the history of Poland after the fall of communism.”

Tusk pointed out that while the software contract restricted targeting phone numbers from Russia, Belarus, and North Korea, Polish agencies instead directed the tool at Polish citizens, political opposition figures, journalists, and even officials in partner EU nations such as France and Germany.

"Imagine that the people responsible for justice and national security [in Poland] handed over thousands, tens of thousands, of sensitive details about Polish citizens to a foreign country, Israel, without having any control over it," Tusk said.

When Tusk’s pro-EU coalition won power in late 2023, his administration opened formal criminal investigations and established a special parliamentary commission of inquiry to examine operational abuse between 2015 and 2023.

The latest prosecutor findings confirm that the system was not only used domestic-politically, but was operated in a way that exposed sensitive national security information to foreign commercial and intelligence entities.
