Trump Backs Down From 48-hour Ultimatum, Claims 'Productive Conversations' To End Iran War
March 24, 2026

President Trump claimed on Truth Social that the U.S. and Iran had held “very good and productive conversations” over the past two days regarding a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East. Based on these discussions, he said he instructed the Department of War to postpone military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days, pending the outcome of ongoing talks.

"I AM PLEASE TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. BASED ON THE TENOR AND TONE OF THESE IN DEPTH, DETAILED, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS, WITCH WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES AGAINST IRANIAN POWER PLANTS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A FIVE DAY PERIOD, SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ONGOING MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP" the president wrote Monday.

Over the weekend, Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face obliteration of its power grid. Iran responded with counter-threats, escalating global energy tensions.

Backing down Monday, Trump told reporters that special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had engaged in intense discussions with a senior Iranian official, possibly linked to parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf. He said there were “major points of agreement,” including Iran committing not to pursue nuclear weapons and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Also U.S. officials had reportedly asked Pakistani and Turkish officials for help in arranging a meeting between Vice President JD Vance and Ghalibaf. Iranian officials no longer trust Witkoff and Kushner.

Iran’s foreign ministry called Trump's remarks “part of efforts to reduce energy prices and buy time” for military plans. Officials stated there were no direct or indirect communications with the U.S., labeling Trump’s claims as “psychological warfare” and “fake news.”

State television broadcasting claimed “the US president backs down following Iran's firm warning.” An unnamed security official said Trump retreated after Iran threatened to target all power, IT, and desalination infrastructure in the Gulf region, and even **shut down the Strait of Hormuz if attacked.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, a key figure in Iran’s war effort, echoed the denial on X, calling the reports of talks "fake news."

"Iranian people demand complete and remorseful punishment of the aggressors," Ghalibaf wrote. "All Irainan officials stand firmly behind their supreme leader and people until this goal is achieved. No negotiations have been held with the US, and fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped."

Despite the denials, regional backchannel efforts are underway, with countries like Egypt and Pakistan attempting to mediate. Trump’s announcement caused oil prices to drop over 13% and financial markets to rally, reflecting investor response to the prospect of de-escalation. However, Iranian state media and officials maintain that no talks are occurring, and that Trump’s statements are a tactical maneuver rather than evidence of diplomacy.

Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he spoke with Trump and Vance about the diplomatic efforts. Netanyahu said Trump believed the military gains from the war could be leveraged into a deal that would safeguard Israel’s vital interests. However, Netanyahu emphasized that Israeli strikes on Iran and Lebanon would continue, targeting missile and nuclear programs and Hezbollah.

Oil prices plunged over 13%, with Brent crude falling below $100, and U.S. stock indices surged after Trump’s announcement—only to pull back sharply when Iran denied talks, creating volatility.

The ongoing war began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026**, which killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military leaders.

U.S. Enforcing Naval Blockade Of Iran, As Israeli Airstrikes Pummel Lebanon

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) began enforcing a naval blockade of all maritime traffic entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas on April 13, 2026, at 14:00 UTC, following the collapse of U.S.-Iran peace talks in Islamabad. The blockade, which applies "impartially against vessels of all nations," targets Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman but excludes ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, preserving regional oil flows not linked to Iran.

CENTCOM issued formal notices to commercial mariners ahead of the blockade, outlining enforcement procedures. The move aims to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran had effectively restricted to U.S. and Israeli allies since the war began on February 28.

President Donald Trump initially declared a full blockade of the Strait on social media, accusing Iran of "world extortion" for demanding tolls and citing mine threats, but the military’s implementation was more targeted.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Naval Forces issued a statement warning that any military vessels approaching the Strait of Hormuz would be considered in violation of the two-week ceasefire and "dealt with severely."

Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, claimed the Islamabad talks were close to a deal but collapsed due to U.S. "maximalism" and shifting demands. The U.S. and Iran agreed to a 2-week ceasefire last Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued in southern Lebanon, violating the ceasefire framework and complicating diplomatic efforts, as backchannel negotiations between Iran and the U.S. reportedly continue despite public hostilities.

Magyar Wins Supermajority In Hungary's Election, Ending Orbán’s 16-year Rule

Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party won a landslide victory in Hungary’s Sunday parliamentary election, securing 138 of 199 seats with over 53% of the vote, granting a constitutional supermajority and ending Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule.

Orbán conceded defeat less than three hours after polls closed, calling the result “painful but unambiguous,” and confirmed in a phone call to Magyar: “I congratulated the victorious party. We are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.” He later addressed supporters, saying, “The days ahead of us are for us to heal our wounds,” and pledged continued service from opposition.

Magyar declared victory saying: “My fellow Hungarians, we have done it! Together, we liberated Hungary and got rid of the Orbán regime.”

Speaking to tens of thousands along the Danube, Magyar said, “Tonight, truth prevailed over lies,” and credited voters with rewriting history by asking “what they could do for their homeland.” He called for peaceful celebration and announced plans to begin the “healing” of the country immediately, urging Orbán not to take any obstructive actions before leaving office. The prime minister-elect also demanded the resignation of Hungary’s President Tamás Sulyok, along with the heads of the supreme court, chief prosecutor, media authority, and competition office, citing the need to dismantle Orbán’s captured institutions and hold corrupt actors accountable.

Tisza’s supermajority enables reversal of Orbán-era laws, judicial reforms, and unlocking of frozen EU funds.

Record turnout reached nearly 80%, driven heavily by youth, with polls indicating 65% of voters under 30 opposed Orbán.

Orbán, a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, faced international left-wing opposition for his conservative pro-family, anti-LGBTQ and anti-illegal immigration policies and his opposition to the European Union's globalist agenda and Russia-Ukraine policies.

Globalist leaders, including European Union's Ursula von der Leyen, Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, celebrated the result as a win for European democracy, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed readiness to improve bilateral ties despite Magyar’s opposition to arming Ukraine. The center-right prime minister-elect ran to the ideological right of Orbán during the campaign

NG-24: SpaceX Launches Cygnus XL Resupply Freight To The Space Station

SpaceX Falcon 9 launched Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the NG-24 mission. The spacecraft, named the 'S.S. Steven R. Nagel', carried over 5 metric tons) of essential supplies, scientific experiments, and hardware for the Expedition 74 crew, marking the second flight of the enhanced Cygnus XL variant.

"And liftoff! Science and supplies soaring to the International Space Station aboard the S.S. Steven R. Nagel," NASA spokesperson Sandra Jones said during live commentary.

The Falcon 9 first stage booster(B1094) executed a flawless landing back at Cape Canaveral, completing its seventh flight. Cygnus XL was scheduled to arrive at the ISS on April 13, 2026, where it would be captured by the Canadarm2 robotic arm and berthed to the Unity module's Earth-facing port.

The Cygnus XL represents a significant upgrade, featuring a 20% increase in pressurized cargo volume compared to previous models, with a pressurized cargo module measuring 7.89 meters in length and a total capacity of 36 cubic meters.

The cargo manifest includes 1,410 kg of crew supplies, 1,075 kg of science investigations, 65 kg of spacewalk equipment, 2,120 kg of vehicle hardware, and 330 kg of computer resources.

Notable payloads include a new module for the Cold Atom Laboratory, hardware for biological research, a radio receiver for observing the ionosphere, the ClimCam climate camera (developed by Kenya, Egypt, and Uganda), and the LEOPARDSat-1 CubeSat to test radiation-blocking carbon sheeting.

This mission is part of NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-2) contract and is the fourth and final Cygnus launch on a Falcon 9, following the retirement of Northrop Grumman's Antares 230+ rocket in 2023 due to supply chain disruptions caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The S.S. Steven R. Nagel honors Steven R. Nagel, a NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions and logged over 720 hours in space before his death in 2014.

Like all Cygnus spacecraft, the XL is a one-way vehicle; after its mission, it will be loaded with station waste, detached, and perform a controlled de-orbit maneuver to burn up safely in Earth's atmosphere. This is unlike the SpaceX cargo Dragon which is reusable.
