SpaceX launched the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation Flight Model 3 (CSG-FM3) satellite at 0209 UTC (on Jan. 3) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The Falcon 9 rocket carried the 1,700-kg satellite for the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Ministry of Defence, designed for dual civilian and military Earth observation using synthetic aperture radar to provide high-resolution imaging day or night, regardless of weather conditions.

The Falcon 9's first stage, booster B1081, completed its 21st flight and landed safely at Landing Zone 4 at Vandenberg about 8.5 minutes after liftoff, while about 4.5 minutes later, the second stage deployed the satellite into a low Earth orbit at an altitude of 620 km and an inclination of 97.8 degrees.

The COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation constellation, consisting of four satellites, aims to support applications such as emergency prevention, environmental monitoring, defense, maritime surveillance, and agriculture management, with the satellite’s planned end-of-life date set for December 2032.

COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation is a small network designed to "monitor the Earth for the sake of emergency prevention, strategy, scientific and commercial purposes, providing data on a global scale to support a variety of applications," according to a European Space Agency.

Among those applications are "risk management, cartography, forest & environment protection, natural resources exploration, land management, defense and security, maritime surveillance, food & agriculture management," the explainer adds.

The spacecraft will study Earth using synthetic aperture radar, gathering data at all times of day and in all weather conditions from an altitude of 620 km.

Three COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellites have now launched to date. The first one flew in December 2019 atop a Soyuz rocket, and the second lifted off in January 2022 on a Falcon 9.

The mission marked the first launch of 2026 for SpaceX and the global space community, following two previous scrubbed attempts on December 27 and 28 due to a ground systems issue with the launch pad hold-down clamps. The company launched a whopping 165 orbital missions in 2025 — far more than any other entity, either commercial or governmental.

US Troop Killed By Unexploded Ordnance In Iraq, As CENTCOM Strikes Iranian Targets For The 9th Consecutive Night

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the recovery of unidentified remains in Jordan from an Iranian attack on July 17 that killed two U.S. service members and left one missing. Separately, a U.S. service member was killed in action on July 18 in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, with a second service member sustaining minor injuries.

Following an Iranian ballistic missile and drone strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base (MSAB) in Jordan on July 17, two U.S. service members were confirmed dead and one was listed as missing. Four others were injured. On Sunday, CENTCOM search-and-recovery teams located unidentified remains at the strike location. Forensic examination is underway to verify whether the remains belong to the missing service member.

The conflict, which began in February 2026, has resulted in 17 U.S. service member deaths and over 430 injuries.

The report comes on the ninth consecutive evening of U.S. airstrikes against Iran, launched to "swiftly punish" Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces responsible for the Jordan attack. The strikes targeted Iranian coastal surveillance, air defense systems, and missile storage facilities.

Reports indicate U.S. strikes hit IRGC-operated Tabriz Missile Field in East Azerbaijan Province of Northwestern Iran, and the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant, though the IAEA states no nuclear material was present.

"They've got very little left-they've got some missiles, they've got some drones, they've got some manufacturing ability, not much. Uhh we control the Strait," President Trump told reporters after his attendance at the FIFA World Cup final match between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey. "They don't control anything. So we'll see what happens but we hit em very hard again tonight, and we did that it honor of the...probably 3, it's probably 3, as opposed to 2....great patriots."

IRGC has already started retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq. U.S offiials warned Americans living in Bahrain and Jordan of specific threats of some planned Iranian attacks.

Spain Defeats Argentina 1-0 To Win FIFA World Cup Presented By Trump

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing their second title with a 106th-minute extra-time goal by Ferran Torres. The match, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, was a tense affair dominated by Spanish possession, with Argentina failing to register a single shot on goal throughout the 120 minutes.

The deadlock was broken when Nico Williams headed a pass toward the goal, allowing substitute Torres to score the decisive winner early in the second half of extra time.

Argentina's chances were severely hampered after Enzo Fernández received a red card in the 93rd minute, forcing them to play with 10 men for the entire extra-time period. Despite a record-breaking performance by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who made 11 saves, he could not stop Torres's strike.

Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after the match, shedding tears as he received his runner-up medal in what may be his final World Cup appearance. Immediately after the final whistle, some frustrated Argentinian players were also seen harassing some Spanish players as they celebrated. Not in the spirit of fair play.

The trophy presentation featured U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who presented the medals and the World Cup trophy on the field.

The event included a 30-minute halftime break with show featuring performances by Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS, and others, marking the first time a World Cup final featured such an extensive musical intermission.

Andrew Tate, Tristan Arrested In Miami, To Face Charges In UK

Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate were arrested by U.S. Marshals in Miami on Saturday, pursuant to a sealed extradition warrant issued by the United Kingdom. The arrests follow the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) approving 38 new charges, bringing the total against the brothers to 59.

Andrew faces 42 charges, including rape and trafficking, while Tristan faces 17. The alleged offenses span from July 2010 to August 2017 and involve seven total alleged victims, with the new charges stemming from four additional victims reported to Bedfordshire Police.

The specific additional charges authorized by the CPS include rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and offenses relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.

Andrew is charged with seven further counts of rape, three counts of trafficking facilitation, three counts of assault, and 19 counts related to indecent images and extreme pornography.

Tristan faces one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of facilitating trafficking. The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed the arrests were made in accordance with extradition treaties, and the brothers are expected to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida early in the week following the arrest.

The Tate brothers, dual U.S. and British citizens, rose to prominence as controversial "manosphere" influencers promoting hypermasculinity. They previously faced charges in Romania for organized crime, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation, which were dropped in 2023. They returned to the United States in early 2025 after Romanian travel restrictions were lifted.

The Tate brothers' attorney, Joseph McBride, has denied all allegations, calling the arrests a "political hit" and stating they are innocent. McBride also noted that the both were held in solitary confinement as they await extradition proceedings, which they are expected to contest.

Assistant Chief Constable Karena Thomas of Bedfordshire Police said in statement: "Officers from our major crime unit have been working closely alongside the Crown Prosecution Service and both national and international law enforcement agencies as part of this complex investigation. There is no place for male violence against women and girls, and we will continue to tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us."
